Maitrī, the Holidays, and the Sacred Act of Choosing Peace Over Bloodlines
The holidays have a way of stirring up old wounds — especially for those of us who made the unimaginably difficult decision to go no-contact or low-contact with our families of origin.
Let’s say this clearly, because almost nobody does:
Choosing peace is not betrayal.
Choosing safety is not cruelty.
Choosing mental health is not selfish.
Choosing distance is not a moral failure.
Some of us grew up in families where love was conditional,
where boundaries were disrespected,
where our worth was questioned,
where our needs were ignored,
where abuse was normalized,
where “respect” meant “don’t talk back,”
where individuality was punished,
where silence kept the illusion of harmony alive.
Leaving that dynamic —
whether fully or partially —
is one of the bravest things a person can do.
It is Maitrī in motion:
loving-kindness directed toward yourself first.
People love to throw around the phrase:
“Blood is thicker than water.”
But the actual proverb is:
“The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.”
It means the opposite.
It means the relationships forged through trust, loyalty, love, choice, and shared adversity
are deeper, stronger, and more sacred
than the relationships formed merely by shared DNA.
Family is built, not inherited.
The people you choose —
your partner, your friends, your found family, your community, your Witchlings —
those are the ones bound to you by the blood of the covenant.
Those relationships are real.
Those bonds are valid.
Those connections matter.
And choosing them over the people who harmed you
is not abandonment.
It is liberation.
So if the holidays bring up grief, conflict, guilt, or pressure…
if you’re lighting a Yule candle alone for the first time…
if you’re struggling with the echo of people who no longer have access to you…
or if you’re celebrating with joy because you finally feel free…
Know this:
✨ You are allowed to protect your peace.
✨ You are allowed to walk away from harmful people.
✨ You are allowed to heal without your family’s participation.
✨ You are allowed to build a life outside the bloodline.
✨ You are allowed to choose yourself.
And you are not alone.
This coven stands with you.
